Toyota Sequoia
The big, eight-passenger Sequoia has a strong and refined 5.7-
liter V8 engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission.
That combination returned only 15 mpg overall in our tests. Rear-
wheel drive and selectable full-time four-wheel drive are available.
The ride is firm, and handling is clumsy but secure. The independent
rear suspension allows the third-row seat to fold f lat into a well. It’s
a high step-in to enter the cabin, but once inside, passengers will
find the interior to be very roomy. Electronic connectivity includes
the Entune touch-screen audio system. Recent updates brought an
exterior freshening and a comprehensive suite of standard advanced
safety features, including forward collision warning and automatic

Toyo ta R AV4
The RAV4’s 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine is paired with an
eight-speed automatic transmission and delivers relatively
quick acceleration and a commendable 27 mpg overall in our tests.
The hybrid version feels energetic, with the electric drive producing
immediate and quiet motivation from a standstill. It got 37 mpg over-
all in our tests. There’s limited body lean when taking corners and
responsive steering, but the RAV4’s ride is stiff and a little jumpy, and
the noisy engine hurts the driving experience. All-wheel-drive ver-
sions allow the driver to select modes to optimize traction on sand
or mud. Apple CarPlay compatibility is standard (there’s no Android
Auto). Toyota’s Safety Sense system is standard, and includes for-
ward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emer-
gency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist.
