Florent Amodio of France was the surprise victor at the 2011
European Championships in Bern, Switzerland, defeating
his teammate Brian Joubert and Tomáš Verner of the
Czech Republic.
Joanne Carter and Miriam Manzano
were the two modern-day trailblazers
of Australian ladies figure skating.
During her career, Carter achieved
the highest results ever for an
Australian skater (male or female) and
represented her country at the 1998
and 2006 Olympic Winter Games.
The seven-time national champion
retired in 2007 and toured Europe with
Holiday on Ice for five years.
Carter, 39, who earned a degree in
physiotherapy during her competitive
era, returned to school and is in her
final year of medicine at the University
of Sydney.
Manzano, 44, a six-time national
champion, retired in 2006 and
began coaching young skaters in her
adopted hometown of Canberra, the
nation’s capital.
Married in 2014, she is now known
as Manzano Hammond.
2004 Four Continents
Dorota Siudek (Zagórska) and Mariusz Siudek were
the first and remain the only Polish pairs team to ever
medal at a World Championships (bronze in 1999).
The duo, who were coached by Richard Gauthier
in Montréal, Canada, retired in 2007
Mariusz, 47, proposed to Dorota, 43, at the 2000
World Championships and they married two months
later. In 2009 they welcomed a son, Richard. The
couple turned to coaching and work at a rink in
Dorota’s hometown of Toruް
