Studies indicate that firearms
are used more than 2 million
times a year for personal
protection, and that the
presence of a firearm, without
a shot being fired, prevents
crime in many instances.
Shooting usually can be
justified only where crime
constitutes an immediate,
imminent threat to life, limb,
or, in some cases, property.

A

cabbie picked up a fare on the campus of Indiana State University during
his midmorning shift. After entering the cab, the passenger gave the driver
directions to a nearby apartment. As the passenger exited the vehicle, he
suddenly pulled out a gun in an alleged attempt to rob the cab driver. In response,
the cab driver grabbed his own firearm and shot the passenger, who ran away
from the scene. Police found the would-be robber after he called for emergency
medical treatment. The injured man was taken to a local hospital and treated for
non-life-threatening injuries. Police later charged the man with armed robbery. The
cab driver wasn’t facing any charges in the incident. (Fox59.com, Indianapolis, Ind.,

n Washington state, a homeowner
encountered a vagrant who had broken
into his home. He asked the intruder to
leave the premises, however, the transient
man refused and began to come through
the back door aggressively. He allegedly
attacked the owner of the home. In
response, the homeowner grabbed a piece
of wood and began to defend himself
against his attacker in the kitchen, but this
did not deter the homeless man. Fearing
for the safety of his wife and himself, the
man armed himself with a gun and fired
a single shot at the burglary suspect.
“The homeowner knew that he did the
right thing, and the only thing he could
do to protect himself and his wife,” said
a representative of the Thurston County
Sheriff’s Office. The homeowner will not
face any charges. However, the suspect was
facing charges for first-degree residential
burglary upon release from a local hospital,
where he was receiving treatment for a
gunshot wound to the chest. (q13fox.com,

n Baton Rouge, La., an employee at
a grocery store was working when a
masked man entered early in the morning.
The robber had a gun and demanded
the employees hand over money or they
would be shot. One employee grabbed a
gun and fired as the armed robber tried to
jump over the counter where the employee
was. The employee shot the robber, who
collapsed on the floor after being struck
in the side. Paramedics arrived on scene
to transport the injured man to a hospital,
where he later died. The clerk was not
charged by police, who considered it a self-
defense case. (wbrz.com, Baton Rouge, La.,

The three suspects fled the area, leaving
their car behind. Police were called to
the scene, and located and caught two
of the suspects. The third is still at large
according to the most-recent report.

A

retired officer carrying a concealed
firearm came to the rescue in what
might have been a deadly robbery. In
Coatesville, Pa., the retired police officer
was waiting to pick up a friend outside of a
nearby convenience store. A man in his early
30s entered the store and allegedly pointed
a firearm at multiple employees, threatening
to shoot them. The apparent armed robber
demanded money, and retrieved it from the
cash register. The former officer saw what
he believed was an attempted robbery in
progress and entered the store, shooting
at the suspect several times. The suspect
has been charged on multiple counts.
“We got lucky,” said Tom Hogan, Chester
County District Attorney. “If not for this
retired officer being in the right place at
the right time, we certainly would have had
a robbery, and might have seen a double
murder. Instead, this defendant now will
face justice.” (dailylocal.com, Coatesville, Pa.,

A

car thief chose the wrong vehicle to steal
in St. Louis. The vehicle’s owner stopped
at a gas station convenience store and left his
car running. As he was shopping, he spotted
another man entering the car. The car owner
left the shop and confronted the would-be
car thief, who pulled out a gun and pointed
it in the direction of the owner. The owner
pulled his own firearm and exchanged gunfire
with the thief, shooting him. The thief fled in
another vehicle to a hospital, according to
news reports. (stltoday.com,St. Louis, Mo.,
