OFF THE CUFF

Anti-ageing solutions for men,

by Adrian Clark

O

nce Upon a Time in
Hollywood, Quentin
Tarantino’s new opus,
left me with an
important question. How is it
that Brad Pitt never seems to
look any older? The man is 55
and while, admittedly, he did
begin his career with an
advantage in the “good genes”
department, he clearly has
always looked after himself.
As with most things,
prevention is better than cure
when it comes to a grooming
regimen to hold back the cruel
effects of time. That said, I
have found five formulations
that really will help to make a
noticeable difference and are
easy-maintenance – even if
you are a late-starter.
American skincare brand
CeraVe has a great two-in-one
hydrating cleanser for face
and body, which helps to
restore the skin’s natural
barrier and retain moisture.
As men get older, our skin
tends to dry out, even though
we do start life with a higher
percentage of oil in our skin
than females have. As a
once-a-week treat I would
recommend using a mask –
yes, really. With powerful,
concentrated ingredients it
can turbocharge the effects of
your day-to-day grooming
routine. Dermalogica, another
American brand, is the one I
started using when I turned

  1. Its Power Recovery
Masque is easy to apply, is
    infused with a cocktail of
    vitamins, and gives an
    instantly visible pick-me-up to
    lacklustre skin.
    You should use separate
    moisturisers for your face and
your eyes, as the skin around
    your eyes is much thinner,
    and the type of heavy-duty
    hydrator you need to nourish
your skin as it begins to lose
    collagen will be too heavy.
    Kiehl’s Age Defender
    Moisturiser, developed
    specifically for midlifers,
    gently exfoliates dead skin

cells, allowing the formula to
more effectively penetrate
the skin. For the eyes, I’d
suggest Clinique’s Maximum
Hydrator Eye 96-hour Hydro
Filler Concentrate.
Finally, for those lucky
enough to have a healthy head
of hair, Christophe Robin, the
French hair stylist, has a
shampoo (Cleansing
Thickening Paste with Pure
Rassoul Clay and Tahitian
Algae) that reinvigorates and
volumises hair from the roots.

ANDREW CROWLEY FOR THE TELEGRAPH

T

his, for many, is the
final weekend of the
summer holidays.
What a summer! I
would love to relive
it all but in the spirit
of looking forward,
today’s column is all
about preparing for the season ahead.
Change is in the air. For me and
my husband, a new chapter begins in
that our eldest daughter starts school
next week. “Name-tape trauma” is
enveloping me. I’ve left it too late as
always. No iron-on labels for me (big
mistake). I’ve decided to emulate my
dear mother, sewing night after
night, going cross-eyed – because
some traditions just have to be
maintained. Come Wednesday, my
daughter will bravely walk into her
new school in her slightly-too-big
uniform. I will be a wreck, trying to
keep it together, wondering where
the years went (and hoping that I
remembered to order her lunch). I
will then return home, probably put
another wash on, tidy up plates of
half-finished toast and then what?
Well, this is when the “me time”
starts. For so many, this means a
workout... so today is devoted to
revamping the “back to the gym”
look for anyone who might have,
ever so slightly, fallen off the wagon
into a mountain of croissants and ice
cream these past few weeks.
I haven’t changed my sports kit
in about four years. It falls into the
pyjamas category, in terms of
pecking order. Old T-shirts, leggings
with the elastic slightly snagging...
And then I discovered Lucas Hugh.
This is a one-stop shop for workout
wear that sculpts, moulds and
essentially transforms you before
you’ve even set foot in a spin, yoga or
boxing class. Lucas Hugh, owned by

Anjhe Marcus, shot to fame following
the success of the athletic costumes it
made for The Hunger Games films.
Forever upping the ante, Marcus, as
CEO and creative director, has sought
to adapt each collection to include
items you can throw over your kit
after the gym. She understands that

sometimes we just want to
do the gym, supermarket,
dry cleaner and post office in
one (slick) look. Cue this
ankle-length mesh skirt

  • smart enough to
    transform your look for
    those in-between episodes

of your day. It’s
specifically to wear over
sports leggings so you
aren’t overtly on show.
I trialled the Lucas
Hugh technical
leggings last week in
Scotland where I spent
a week climbing hills,
fishing in rivers and
running after children
and dogs. All I can say
is, they worked. By
that I mean they held
me in, they absorbed
any sweat, they kept
me both cool and
warm and somehow
they made my legs
look better despite
the number of KitKats
and Kettle Chips consumed
each day. Farewell to the
tweed plus fours...
Lucas Hugh sets the bar
high in terms of technical
fabrics and these are a far cry
from pieces you see from
obvious sportswear brands,
or brands trying to tap into our
well-being obsession. It’s time
to bid adieu to the tired Wham!
tour T-shirts that accompany
you to the weekly yoga or tai chi
session. Up your game, feel the
“hug of some Hugh” and reap
the rewards. Even if you don’t
make it to the gym class, you will
feel a better version of yourself,
and you will likely embrace the
new season with a renewed zest
for life, and lunges.
