Wet and windy

start to autumn

for the North

By Peter Stanford

TODAY is the first day of
meteorological autumn, and that
abrupt change from summer will make
itself especially felt in the northern half
of the country, with strong winds
bringing heavy rain and a distinct nip
in the air towards evening.
In other parts, though, there will be
more continuity with recent days. The
split between the North and West, and
the South and East, that shaped the
back end of last week will continue.
While there has been plenty of
sunshine across south-east England,
up into Lincolnshire, elsewhere rain
and showers have been the order of
the day.
For today, though, even those
hitherto sheltered places stand a
decent chance of temporarily losing
that lingering feeling of summer for
something cooler and wetter. The
culprit is a frontal system that is
making its way over most of the
country. In the North, that could lead
to thundery outbursts. In London,
expect 70F (21C), Plymouth 64F (18C),
Liverpool 62F (17C) and just 59F (15C)
in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Late in the
day, the rain should stop and the
strong north-westerly breeze abate,
but it will still be chilly overnight.
For those returning to school, it is
again going to be those eastern and
southern parts that look best placed to
feel the moderating influence of high
pressure coming our way on milder
south-westerly breezes.
Meanwhile, hurricane season is at
its peak and Hurricane Dorian, in
particular, heading for Florida, has
caused Donald Trump to cancel a
planned trip to Poland to take charge
of emergency preparations for the
threatened area that includes his own
Mar-a-Lago resort at Palm Beach.
Some of the aftermath tends to head
eastwards, which means for Northern
Ireland and much of Scotland, that
may bring more rain and strong gusts.
