The Monuments Men (2014)
CHANNEL 4, 11.15PM ★★★

‹ George Clooney directs and stars in
this historical caper, based on the true
story of an Allied group in the midst of
the Second World War. Clooney and
chums (Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett,
etc) play the team of art experts who
landed in Normandy in 1944, assigned
to safeguard the treasures of Bruges,
Ghent and elsewhere from pillaging
Nazis. It’s heavy-handed, but the
fascinating story makes up for that.

Cinderella (2015)
BBC ONE, 4.05PM ★★★★

‹ Kenneth Branagh’s live-action
Cinderella sticks to the script of
Disney’s Fifties animated version, so
Cinders herself (Lily James) is little
more than a goody-goody one-shoe.
But Cate Blanchett is marvellous as the
Wicked Stepmother, Helena Bonham
Carter makes for a jolly Fairy
Godmother, and Stellan Skarsgård and
Derek Jacobi give able support. The
costumes are utterly sumptuous.

Asterix: The Secret of the Magic
Potion (2018)
SKY CINEMA PREMIERE, 6.15PM ★★★

‹ After village Druid, Getafix, falls
and breaks his leg, he decides that
he, Asterix and Obelix must go on
a quest to find a young successor,
onto whom he can pass the Secret
of the Magic Potion. As usual, no
sooner have they headed off than
the pesky Romans sidle back
onto the scene. It’s colourful fun,
stuffed with zany one-liners.
