TROUSERS AREN’T EXACTLYground-

breaking fashionterritory.Inthe century-

and-a-half orso sincewomen fought for and

wontherighttowearthem,they’vebeena

wardrobe staple, ago-to for effortless

everydaydressing. Exceptthatthey’renot

effortless, are they?Oratleast not to shop

for.Asafashioneditor,being open to new

trends and brandsis parfor thecourse,but I

must admitthatI’ve never managedtomake

trouserswork forme (possiblyputoffbythe

flammable–andwildly unflattering–pairs

that Iwas forcedtowearwaitressingasa

teen). I’ve gotmanypairs of jeans, but only

one pair of trousers–andthoseare 10-year-

oldchinosthat no longergetpastmybum.

Butthis year’s iterations aretoogoodto

miss. After seasons (and seasons, and

seasons)of‘wear-everywhere’ dresses,

trousers foreveryoccasion havebegun

springinguponthecatwalks. Evenavowed

‘dress people’–ofwhichIamone –willfind

this season’s trousersawelcome wardrobe

palate cleanser, onceyou’ve foundapair to

suit.Orindeed,fivepairs–sincethereare

fivekeyshapes to tryasthe weather turns.
