was feeling adrift.Recentlyseparatedfrom
thefather of herthreechildren, she was on
herownforthefirsttime in 25years, living in
anew houseandworking asaprimaryschool
teacher.‘The kidswere gettingolder andIwas
thinking,there’sgot tobemorethanthis,’ she
says.‘I likedmyjob butIknewtherewas
something moreinme. Ididn’t want tobe
doingthesamething infive years’time.’
Totake her mind offthings,thekeenhome
cooksignedupforathree-daybread-making
course.‘Ihadalot of energyandIdidn’twant
to sit inthecorner feeling miserable,’ she
says.‘Making breadprovidedthemostthera-
peutic distraction.Ibecame obsessedover-
night:Ibakedand bakedandvolunteeredin
bakeriesandcookeryschools, went on more
coursesandreadbooks about baking.’
