FALL 2019

Jo and I have always naturally been on the
same page with one another. We operate
primarily from our gut—making most of our
decisions based on what feels right to us both.
That “feeling” or “moral compass” or whatever
you want to call it has worked well for us. It’s
kept us moving toward the next right thing
based on who we are rather than the way that
things have always, or already, been done.
We operate in much the same way when
it comes to our business. As Magnolia
started to grow, it was important to us that
we put something together, a cornerstone or
lighthouse of sorts, that would help guide the
work we’re doing. And more than that, serve as
a reminder to Jo and me about the impression
we hope Magnolia makes on anyone whose
path it crosses. We called it the Magnolia
Manifesto. Since its creation, its words have
helped lead our company well. They’ve offered
direction on new ventures and clarity in times
of transition. They’ve also inscribed the last
page of every issue of this magazine. Season
after season, we believed that every line
continued to ring true.
But just as we want to be continual learners
and always evolving, we also want to hold our
Magnolia Manifesto with open hands and
acknowledge when it needs revising. Such a
time came during this past year, so we put a
team together to take a good, hard look at the
manifesto, to go line by line and give us their
thoughts on what might be missing as our
company moves into its next season.
We’re proud of what we landed on, and
equally excited to be sharing the new Magnolia
Manifesto with you. Jo and I have made notes
throughout and highlighted sections that we
were passionate about getting just right.
We want to be fully transparent with you,
our readers and guests, about the footprint
we hope to make in this big world. Even when
it’s impossible to know what’s next, it is our
ongoing desire that Magnolia be a vehicle of
hope on this earth. To that end, these are the
things we believe to be true today.
