Master Class

42

When Krista DuChene turned 40 two
years ago and became a masters athlete,
nothing changed. She continued to log huge miles
and clock some of the fastest marathon times
in the country. “It was just another number,”
DuChene says. “It didn’t bother me at all.”
By Andrea Hill

The Magnificent Monarch Ultra

48

Every year, millions of monarch butterf lies
defy the odds and successfully escape the
Canadian winter by flying to the mountains near
Morelia, Mexico, spawning a 4 ,300-kilometre,
47-day stage race of humans who follow them.
By Dan Dakin

Coast-to-Coast: Seven Great Canadian Marathons

52

Marathoning enraptures Canadians country-
wide, from record breakers to charit y runners
and even the odd joggler. And while we may be
drawn to the challenge for different reasons, each
reason ought to be celebrated. Canadian Running
tips its hat to some of the best 42 .2k races our
nation has to offer.
