20 GH^ SEPTEMBER 2019
reassured (and you should too!) know-
ing our scientists put every item through
rigorous laboratory and blinded consumer
tests using high-tech gear, including sta-
ples like the Cutometer firmness device,
the Visia Complexion Analyzer and the
QUV Accelerated Weathering Tester.
CLIMATE CONTROL
Turn the corner and you’ll see a small
room full of crazy contraptions. It is one
of three environmentally regulated spaces
where we test anything from the strength
of toilet paper or workout wear to the
durability of denim. But often when
I walk by, there’s a person sitting on a
stool reading a book. This means that
the Beauty Lab has co-opted the room to
prep a tester’s skin prior to evaluating
it. Before working here, I never thought
about how much climate might affect the
performance of so many products. But
along the way, the Lab team measures for
shrinkage and seam strength and looks for
fraying and thinning fabric. They also test
diapers for leakage, softness, comfort and
ease of use. Household paper products
are part of this team’s responsibility too.
And since the explosion of online bedding
and mattress companies, we’re busier
than ever—no one wants to unpack and
then have to return a mattress or sheets.

GH KITCHEN OF THE FUTURE
Two years ago, GH teamed up with Miele,
a maker of GH Seal star appliances, to
build a state-of-the-art cooking studio to
assess and showcase culinary innovations.
Our kitchen experts are always testing
new technologies to see if they’ll legiti-
mately make your life easier, tastier or
even healthier. This is also where we create
most of the delicious pictures you see in
GH. Get any of our awesome recipes at
goodhousekeeping.com/recipes.
THE ICONIC GH TEST KITCHEN
It’s just around the corner, and you should
already be smelling the deliciousness.
But jaws drop when visitors see the places
where the melt-in-your-mouth magic
happens! I say “places” because this large
L-shaped room contains four complete
kitchens, each equipped with different
appliances to develop and test, test, test our
trusted dishes. Every GH recipe is made
many times, using a variety of gear and
cooking technologies (e.g., gas, electric and
induction ranges; nonstick, cast-iron and
stainless steel pans) to make sure that no
matter how your kitchen is kitted out, our
recipes will work for you! When you stop
by, if you’re lucky, you might get a chance
to taste what’s cooking! Gluten-free
brownies, anyone?
it makes sense that if you live in a warm
climate, your beauty products may work
differently, and if you are faced with high
humidity, the paint you just put on the wall
might not set properly. We care about this!
FIBER-SCIENCE HQ
Have you ever gotten a new set of sheets
only to find that they no longer fit your
mattress after being washed? This is
just one of the concerns the GH Textiles
Lab—made up of highly specialized fiber
scientists—addresses with its testing.
When you peek into this space, you see
a lineup of washers ready for duty. They
look completely normal, even a bit boring
in plain white, with few buttons or screens,
but they represent the industry standard
for textiles testing. We also have other
equipment that allows our scientists to
wash bedding, towels, you name it in an
accelerated way to assess how the color
will hold up over time in your home. All
