GH SEAL | CELEBRATING 110 YEARS
22 GH^ SEPTEMBER 2019

Dr. Wiley and writer Anne Lewis Pierce write
a GH exposé on obesity cures called “Swindled
Getting Slim.” It details how diet hucksters sell
products that range from misleading to fraudulent
without getting caught by regulators.

APPLIANCE ANALYSIS
The next stop is the GH Kitchen Appli-
ances and Technology Lab. This is where
items used to prepare, cook or store food
are tested: fridges, microwaves, blenders,
air fryers and more. Prep gear like measur-
ing cups, pans, knives and mixers is also
on the docket. One test that never ceases
to amaze me is baking multiple sheets
of cookies in different parts of each oven
to make sure they brown evenly top to
bottom, side to side and back to front.
CHEERS FOR GOOD NUTRITION!
As if all that kitchen focus wasn’t enough,
the GH Institute also houses a Nutrition
Lab with rows of refrigerators full of
ingredients, snacks and more. How can we
be so sure they’re healthy? Our resident
registered dietitian is on call to verify that
before anything is tested for convenience
and taste, its nutritional claims are legit
and it meets current health standards.
(SPARKLING) CLEAN LAB
We’re not called Good Housekeeping for
nothing! Because we know few people
want to spend more time cleaning, we do
the work to find the easiest, most effective
ways to make your home shine. In the
GH Cleaning Lab are dishwashers, floor
cleaners, laundry machines, steamers,
detergents, soaps, vacuums, dusters, etc.
As our cleaning director says, while there
may not be a single product that will get
out every stain, there’s generally some-
thing that’ll clean each kind of mess—
you just need to figure out what it is.
That’s what we spend our days doing!
HEALTH, FITNESS, SLEEP...AHHH!
Your well-being has always been central
at GH, but never have we given so many
resources and so much attention to deliver-
ing healthy ideas, tips and insights as in
the past few years. We even opened the
GH Wellness Lab Powered by Elysium
Health, a groundbreaking research and
supplement company that cares as much
about science as we do (we recognized it
with a GH Innovation Emblem for its
commitment to rigorous research and
scientific advancement). Here you’ll see
treadmills, elliptical trainers, Spin bikes
and more. We even have a meditation
room. And because the FDA does not
formally regulate the ingredients in
supplements or personal-care products,
we also make sure anything we recommend
that you put on or in your body has been
vetted for safety and efficacy.
YOUR HOME,
SAFER & SMARTER!
My husband is on a
trip nearly a thousand
miles away, and I got
a call from him this
morning thanking me
for (finally!) remem-
bering to set the security alarm when
I left the house. How did he know how
wonderful I was? An app on his phone
told him! Who knew that one day you’d
be able to see the delivery person at your
front door while at work, be notified if
someone walked through your backyard,
or unlock the garage for someone while
away on vacation? These are just a few of
the benefits we explore for you in the
GH Media & Tech Lab. Not to mention
testing the latest smart TVs, personal
devices, earbuds, virtual assistants and
other innovations for your home.
LITTLE LAB
As a parent, I understand that nothing is
more important than the safety of our
kids. GH rigorously tests baby gear, toys,
strollers, car seats, bottles, high chairs,
monitors, wagons and trikes to make life
with your children “funner” and safer.
Obviously the best thing about the
GH Institute and Labs is that we deliver
the most accurate, up-to-date information,
but the second-best thing is that you can
see it all with your own eyes! If you’re
planning to be near Columbus Circle in
Manhattan, sign up on our website to
come visit us. Can’t wait to see you!
