CLOSER AT HAND

Re “inside The new Race
to the Moon” [July 29]: Ye
Peijian, the leader of China’s
lunar program, may be right
that some people believe that
“if we don’t go there now,
even though we’re capable
of doing so, then we will be
blamed by our descendants.”
But I’m pretty sure that the
majority of our descendants
will blame us for throw-
ing money up in the sky in-
stead of healing our issues
on earth. Just think, as one
among numerous examples,
about global warming.

THE CAPTAIN’S TEST GROUND
Re “The cRickeT woRld
Cup” [July 29]: Your article
extolled the exploits of the
England and Wales cricket
team and the exciting way
they won the World Cup with
a team of diverse nationali-
ties. One thing that definitely
should have been said is that
the captain, Eoin Morgan,
was born and bred in Ireland
and honed his skills playing
the Gaelic game of hurling.
Paul Driscoll,
Blackwood, wales

A DIMMER VIEW
Re “milesTones”
[July 29]: I suspect that many
Greek citizens would have
a rather different descrip-
tion of Christine Lagarde,
who pushed for austerity in

Greece, and would not be so
quick to describe her tenure
at the International Monetary
Fund as being “so success-
ful.” Her coronation as the
head of the European Central
Bank should be questioned
and not necessarily lauded.
It’s another shuffling of the
European elite, demonstrat-
ing the continuing dearth of
true democracy.

SUPPORT FROM AFAR
Re “The Policy seTBacks
Behind the Tweets” [July 29]:
TIME has mercilessly trolled
President Trump for his poli-
cies, his persona, allegations
against his character and
even his tweets. But you are
wrong if you think that the
world views him the way you
do. In India he is viewed as a
patriot, a nationalist, some-
one willing to reach out to
hostile governments and
a staunch defender of the
Constitution—none of which
are a bad thing.

RaiPuR, india

CANDOR AND JUSTICE
Re “The suRViVoR”
[July 29]: Sexual abuse is the
worst you can do to innocent
children, for the dire con-
sequences linger for life, as
indicated by Sara Teristi. It’s
hard to imagine how much
shame victims bear inside,
leaving them to remain silent

and protect their tormentors.
Publishing detailed articles
like this may encourage more
people to accuse their abus-
ers. The more power that
adults are given, the more
daring the abusers are. It’s
time to speak openly about
these disgusting crimes and
break taboos for a better so-
ciety. The shame should not
be among the victims but on
the abusers.

WHAT’S REALLY UNFAIR
Re “souTh aFRican TRack
Star Caster Semenya Won’t
Stop Fighting for Her Right
to Run, Just as She Is”
[July 29]: Caster Semenya
should continue competing
as a woman. It is unfair for
the International Associa-
tion of Athletics Federations
(IAAF) to call her genetic
makeup an unfair advantage
when people have no con-

trol over how they are born.
Some athletes are taller or
stronger genetically but are
not deemed as having an
advantage, so why should
Semenya be banned from
competing as a woman? By
refusing to recognize her as
a female athlete unless she
lowers her testosterone level
through medical interven-
tion, the IAAF is violating
her bodily autonomy.

BITTER HARVEST
Re “india gRaPPles wiTh
Water Shortages as City Resi-
dents Reach Their Limits”
[July 29]: The water short-
age is due to too much ur-
banization and rare concern
for protecting resources like
ponds, rivers and lakes. India
is reaping the fruits of its
rape of nature.

hydeRaBad, india
