T
he sea has no borders. Just like the
creativity and ingenuity that find it
an endless source of inspiration. This
has always been the case. Look at the
horological world, for instance. At
first sight the two sectors have little in
common but on closer inspection, we
realise that the sea was the first test bench for marine
chronometers to establish the exact position of ships at
sea and thus determine longitude. The clock and watch
world went on to benefit even further from the sea by
using it as a research laboratory for what would become
the first diver’s watches in the early years of the last
century. Needless to say, those watches have become cult
objects in their own right. Hence the idea of creating Sea
Time by Top Yacht Design, a special dedicated to that
very subject, which we have included with this issue. It
is but a short leap of the imagination from those time
machines, so to speak, to boats. And this brings into
play another discipline: yacht design. We have seen
how boat platform design has undergone astonishingly
rapid acceleration driven by a market clamouring for new
ideas and also by the yards’ attempts to find new ways
of ensuring their craft stand out from the crowd. That

anniversary and we decided to dedicate a special to that
milestone, by retracing the pivotal moments in the career
of the Avigliana yard from a design perspective. Our
way of highlighting its contribution to the Made in Italy
movement which dominates the design world, both on

IT’S
SEA TIME
by Matteo ZaccagninoIl mare non ha confini. Proprio come la creatività e
l’ingegno che trovano in questo elemento un’inesauribile
fonte d’ispirazione. Non oggi, da sempre. Pensiamo al
mondo dell’orologeria per esempio. Potrete domandarvi
cosa c’entra. A prima vista poco, ma se facciamo lo
sforzo di approfondire il ragionamento ecco che si svela
un mondo. Il mare è stato il primo banco di prova per
misurare attraverso i cronometri da marina l’esatta
posizione di una nave e determinare così la longitudine.
Un settore quello delle lancette che proprio dal mare ha
tratto ulteriori benefici facendolo diventare un banco di
prova e un laboratorio di ricerca dal quale hanno preso
vita, all’inizio del secolo scorso, i primi segnatempo
subacquei diventati oggi oggetti di culto. Da qui l’idea
di creare Sea Time by Top Yacht Design, uno speciale
dedicato all’argomento che troverete allegato a questo
numero della rivista. Dalle macchine del tempo alle
barche il passo è breve. E qui entra in gioco un’altra
disciplina: lo yacht design. Abbiamo visto come negli
ultimi tempi la piattaforma progettuale di una barca
abbia subito un’accelerazione mostruosa sostenuta da un
mercato sempre più affamato di nuove idee, ma anche
dalla necessità da parte dei cantieri di trovare proprio
su questo tema il tratto distintivo della loro offerta. Un
percorso che per Azimut Yachts culmina proprio nel

dedicare a questa importante ricorrenza uno speciale
nell’ambito del quale abbiamo ripercorso, attraverso la
lente del design, le tappe più importanti compiute dal
cantiere di Avigliana. Un modo, se ancora ce ne fosse
bisogno, per ribadire il ruolo e il contributo del made in
Italy che in tema di design, anche quello sull’acqua, è
protagonista assoluto sulla scena mondiale.
