1957 was an important year for Breitling as the
arrival of the Superocean marked the Grenchen
maison’s debut in the dive watch sector. That
first model dazzled diving fans and sold in great
numbers because of its technical prowess: first
and foremost, it was water-resistant to 200 me-
tres, a significant milestone for the era achieved
by a single-block case and armoured glass. The
rest, as they say, is history.
Now the Superocean range is not simply one
of the pillars of the Breitling range but is also
growing once again. “Our Surfer Squad and the
partnership with Outerknown and Ocean Con-
servancy speak volumes about our connection
with the sea,” declares George Kern, CEO of the
maison. “The new Superocean collection featu-
res watches we created for people that want to
explore the oceans whether it be through water
sports or projects aimed at safeguarding the ma-
rine environment”. The Superocean Automatic
44 collection watches have a 44mm steel case
which houses the in-house automatic Calibre 17
with a bi-directional oscillating mass. It has a 38-
hour power reserve and boasts COSC certifica-
tion. It also beats at 28.800 vph and has hours,
minutes, seconds and a calendar.
With a choice of blue and black dials the Supe-
rocean Automatic 44 is an invaluable piece of kit
when diving because itd anti-reflective domed
sapphire glass makes it wonderfully legible as
does its luminescent numerals, indices and hands
which are painted with Super-LumiNova®. It also
has a unidirectional ratcheted bezel and can be
paired with a Diver Pro III rubber wrist strap or a
steel bracelet. It does not disappoint on the per-
formance front either: the Superocean Automatic
44 is designed to withstand the pressure of up
1,000 metres. That is no mean feat for a watch so
very stylish. Its sporty soul is effortlessly married
with a clean, pared-back aesthetic, making it the
ideal companion for undersea exploration and for
everyday wear alike, not least because its case is
just a little over 14 mm thick.
