Blue emotions

Eberhard & Co. wrote many chapters
in watchmaking history and,
thanks to the Scafograf, the underwater
world plays an important role

There are dates that you don’t forget. This
is also true of watchmaking, the purpose of
which is, after all, to measure time.
For Eberhard & Co. June 10th 2019 was the
day when it inaugurated its first museum. It
is located at La Chaux-de-Fonds, specifically
at 73 Avenue Léopold-Robert, which was pre-
viously the maison’s headquarters. Going the-
re is like taking a step back in time and it’s a
story in which the sea has also played its part.
Back in 1958 Eberhard & Co. registered the
name Scafograf, and the following year it pre-
sented the first two models that were desi-
gned for diving.
The brand’s connection with the deep culmi-
nated in 2016 when the Scafograf 300, which
came out that year, won the award for best
sports watch at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie

de Genève. In just four years the Scafograf
collection has gone on to become a key part
of Eberhard’s range of products. As Eberhard
Italy CEO Mario Peserico says, “These are areas
where research and innovation have enabled
the brand, and indeed the whole sector, to
evolve and supply reliable solutions.” And the
market has certainly responded positively. To-
day the collection has three references. The
Scafograf 300 features a stainless steel 43mm
case that is water-resistant at a depth of up to
300 metres, with a ceramic bezel with lumine-
scence on the first quarter of the chapter ring,
a convex sapphire crystal and a helium escape
valve at 9 o’clock.
The black dial has luminescent applique hour
markers and a date window at 3 o’clock. The
GMT version, which was first presented in
2017, likewise has a ceramic bezel and 43mm
stainless steel case which is waterproof at up
to 100 metres.
Its additional features include a triple time
zone which is powered by the calibre ETA
2893-2 with soigné finishes. It comes in ei-
ther blue or black which, not surprisingly, is
also the colour of “The Black Sheep.”
