MOBDRAMATheactressshows
her bad-ass side in the ’70s mob
drama The Kitchen, in which she
co-stars alongside Melissa McCar-
thy and Tiffany Haddish as wives
who take over their gangster hus-
bands’ operations in Hell’s Kitchen
in New York after the men are jailed.
Elisabeth (36) plays the timid wife
of an abusive man and falls in love
with the violence of her new life.
“We all know what a Mafia story
looks like but seeing it from a wom-
an’s perspective and in a really
grounded, gritty and intense way,
was something entirely different,”
director Andrea Berloff says.

CONTROVERSY Elisabeth is a prac-
tising Scientologist, which some
have questioned as being at odds
with the feminist roles she’s had. She
declines to comment, saying only,

things private, because otherwise it
feels as if you don’t have anything
that’s personal. What’s important to
me is in my work. Often the things I
stand for, the things that mean
something to me and my heart, I try
to put into my work.”

LOVE-LIFE Her faith was said to be
a big factor in the breakdown of her
eight-month marriage to actor
Fred Armisen in 2010. She went
on to call the relationship “ex-
tremely traumatic”. Today she
refuses to name who she’s
dating. “I’ve learnt that you
just don’t talk about it.”
She’d love to have kids one
day, but in the meantime she
fusses over her two cats, Lucy and
Ethel, and lives “like an 82-year-
old” in her Manhattan apartment.
“My days of going out to bars
have passed. It’s literally a glass
of wine, a lot of ordering in and
putting something on the iPad.
I think, in a relationship espe-
cially, you have to have that
normalcy.”
