tookusalloutin hisoldrunaboutboatfor

thedayandquicklygotusstrandedonthe

WaitemataHarbour,havingtoberescued

(theboatsatonourfrontlawnafterthat,

nevertoseethewateragain;insteadretired

asa playhouseformybrotherandI).Or

thetimehedressedupasRodStewartfora

golfclubtalentfundraiserandperformed

Sailing–pullingupsomeonefromthe

audiencetodanceduringtheinstrumental

partandrealisingthatwithouthisglasses

onhedidn’tknowif hewaschoosinga

womanora man.(Tohiscredit,hepulled

it off– waltzingthemacrossthefloor,

muchtothecrowd’sdelight.)

He’sa bornperformer– givehima

karaokemicrophoneandhe’llneverletgo–

as wellas a reigningspeedwaysidecarracing

champion(heandhisbrother-in-lawstill

holdtherecordforthethree-laprace),a mad

keengolferanda manwhocanfixorbuild

anythingyoubringhim,froma broken

scooterto a deckonthebackof thehouse.

But,mostimportantly,he’sDad,and– I

think,hismostfavouriteroleofall– he’s

Poppa.Threegrandsonslookupto

him(well,tobefair,physicallytheoldest

probablylooksdownonhimbynow)as

themanwhopushesthemaroundin

wheelbarrowsupanddownthebackyard

astheyscreamwithglee,whoteaches

themhowtodrivebygivingthemlessons

inhisgolf-cartonthedriveway,who

sneaksthemlollieswhentheparentsaren’t

looking,andeventhoughhe’snofanof

thebeach,willspendhoursinthewater

watchingoverhisgrandkids.

He’staughtmetheimportanceofhard

work,andoffamily,andthisFather’sDay

we’llthankourluckystarsforhim.And

maybeputona bitofRodStewartforold

time’ssake.
