SWEET TWEET
We subscribe to @adklifemag and I’ve
just read your great article [“Birding
with Teddy Roosevelt,” August 2019]
in our print version. Particularly inter-
ested because I’m a volunteer with the
National Park Service and lead walking
tours of Theodore Roosevelt Island in
Washington DC. Thanks, @j_fuller!

BAD DATE
I am always thrilled to receive my new-
est issue of Adirondack Life and found
the article about Marc and Bella Cha-
gall at Cranberry Lake (August) enlight-
ening. However, the juxtaposition of
the Chagalls’ escape to New York City
on June 21, 1942, with the quote from
Jackie Wullschläger’s biography was
incorrect. Germany invaded Russia on
June 21, 1941—not in 1942—an incur-
sion known as “Operation Barbarossa.”
It marked a decisive turning point in
German imperial ambitions and geno-
cidal aims.

The Wullschläger quote was correct, but we
weren’t. The Chagalls arrived in New York in
1941, not 1942. —the editors

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
Wait, ... you can earn a #GreatAdiron
dackLifeChallenge #patch from @adk
lifemag just by completing 20 quintes-
sentially #ADK tasks before Labor Day
[“The Great Adirondack Life Challenge,”
2019 Guide to the Great Outdoors]? And,
possibly some really neat prizes? This is

something I didn’t know I needed, ... but
I need it! Let’s see how far I can get.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
My husband and I have finished the
challenge! It was a lot of fun and felt like
a scavenger hunt at times. The blackflies
and mosquitoes were out in force this
season, and in all honesty if we had seen
a real black bear we were going to take
his picture and Photoshop a chainsaw
into his paws. Thank you for creating
this challenge!

There’s still time to take the Great Adiron-
dack Life Challenge and earn a patch! Visit
http://www.adirondacklife.com for the list of 20
activities, to be completed by Labor Day.
