Forecasters issued a tropical storm
warning Sunday for Barbados as
strengthening Tropical Storm Dorian
approached the island off the coast of
northeastern South America.
Authorities in St. Lucia, St. Vincent
and the Grenadines have issued storm
watches, and the National Hurricane
Center said additional watches and
warnings probably would be issued
Monday as the storm approaches the
Windward and Leeward islands, which
include Dominica and Martinique. Sun-
day, the storm was moving west about
14 mph but was expected to turn more
northward, forecasters said.
“A turn toward the west-northwest is
expected on Monday, with this motion
continuing through Tuesday night,” the
center’s forecasters said. “Some
strengthening is forecast during the
next 48 hours, and Dorian could be near
hurricane strength by Tuesday.”
Barbados is about 583 miles south-
east of Puerto Rico. Dorian is expected
to still be hundreds of miles from the
U.S. mainland by the end of the week.
Dorian is expected to be near the
central Lesser Antilles late Monday or
early Tuesday. Sunday evening, it had
maximum sustained winds of about
40 mph with higher gusts.
Dorian is the fourth tropical storm
of the hurricane season.

Officials with NASA are investigating
an allegation that an astronaut ac-
cessed the bank account of her es-
tranged spouse from space, which may
be the first allegation of a crime commit-
ted in space.
Anne McClain, a decorated astronaut
who was once set to be part of NASA’s
first all-female spacewalk, allegedly ac-
cessed Summer Worden’s bank account
while on a six-month mission aboard
the International Space Station, accord-
ing to a report from The New York
Times. The pair were married in 2014;
Worden filed for divorce in 2018.
Worden filed a complaint with the
Federal Trade Commission claiming
McClain had stolen her identity, al-
though she saw no signs anyone had
moved or used money in the account,
The Times reported. Worden’s parents
brought a separate complaint to NASA’s
Office of the Inspector General that de-
scribed a “highly calculated and manip-
ulative campaign” designed to win cus-
tody of the couple’s child.
“There’s unequivocally no truth to
these claims. We’ve been going through
a painful, personal separation that’s
now unfortunately in the media,”
McClain said in a statement released on
Twitter. “I appreciate the outpouring of
support and will reserve comment until
after the investigation. I have total con-
fidence in the IG process.”
NASA declined to comment on per-
sonal or personnel matters involving
employees but released a statement to
Space.com saying: “Lt Col. Anne
McClain has an accomplished military
career, flew combat missions in Iraq
and is one of NASA’s top astronauts.
She did a great job on her most recent
NASA mission aboard the International
Space Station.”
Through her lawyer, Rusty Hardin,
McClain told The Times she had ac-
cessed the account but insisted she did
so to ensure that the family’s finances
were in order and that there was enough
money to care for their child, who was
born a year before they met. She said
she was never told to stop using the ac-
count and continued to use the same
password she had throughout the rela-
tionship.
“She strenuously denies that she did
anything improper,” Hardin said.
The International Space Station is a
joint project involving the United
States, Canada, Japan, Russia and sev-
eral European countries. A legal frame-
workdictates people and possessions in
space are under the jurisdiction of their
country of origin, according to the BBC.

Authorities: Los Angeles deputy
lied about being shot by sniper
A Los Angeles County deputy lied
when he said he was shot in the shoul-
der while standing in a sheriff ’s sta-
tion parking lot last week and will face
a criminal investigation, officials said.
“The reported sniper assault was
fabricated” by Deputy Angel Reinosa,
Assistant Sheriff Robin Limon said
late Saturday.
Reinosa, 21, has been relieved of his
duties and could face charges for filing
a false report, officials said.
Reinosa, who made a frantic radio
call Wednesday claiming he had been
shot, admitted making up the story
and using a knife to cut the two holes
in his shirt, Capt. Kent Wegener said.
Helicopter, small plane collide
in Spain’s Mallorca; 7 dead
A mid-air collision between a sight-
seeing helicopter and a small plane on
the Spanish island of Mallorca killed
seven people Sunday, authorities said.
The victims included three adults
and two children on the helicopter and
two men on the airplane, the regional
government of Spain’s Balearic is-
lands, which include Mallorca, said.
Iraqi militia says two members
killed in new drone attack
Two unidentified drones killed two
Iraqi members of an Iran-backed para-
military force on Sunday, the group said
in a statement, saying the attack took
place in Iraq near the border with Syria.
The statement issued by the Popular
Mobilization Forces said the attack oc-
curred in Anbar province near the Qaim
border crossing with Syria and targeted
the Hezbollah Brigades faction, known
as Brigade 45.
Migrant dies in Croatia after van
with 12 people plunges into river
A migrant died in Croatia after a van
carrying 12 people plunged into a river
and police in North Macedonia found 30
migrants in an abandoned truck.
The crash occurred near the Croatian
border with Slovenia after the driver re-
fused to stop at a checkpoint and was
chased by a patrol. The driver, presum-
ably a migrant smuggler, got out of the
sinking vehicle and fled into a nearby
minefield, Croatian police said.
Police pulled the migrants from the
sinking van, but a woman died at a hos-
pital.
