Hotchkis Sport sway bar to complete
the look. When it’s time to drop
anchor the refreshed dual factory
power master pushes fluid through
steel lines to matching front disc
and rear drum binders. Linking it all
to the street are a set of 18x8 front
and a set of 20x10 rear Coys C-5
wheels in Gunmetal finish wrapped
in ExtremeContact rubber from
Continental.
To give the truck plenty of
dependable power and enough
grit to hold its own on the street, a
Chevrolet Performance 350ci crate
V-8 did the trick. It’s packed with
all the right bits, starting with a
cast-iron four-bolt main block filled
with a nodular iron crank linked to
powdered metal steel rods topped
with cast-aluminum pistons getting
bumped from a hydraulic flat tappet
cam. Iron heads with 76cc chambers
make plenty of seamless power,
especially when expertly matched (by
Jay) to a date-coded LT1 aluminum
dual-plane intake topped with a
Holley (Model 4555) 850-cfm carb
wearing a classic Camaro LT1 air
cleaner. An MSD ignition lights the
fire while spent gases roar through
factory exhaust manifolds to a
custom 2½-inch steel exhaust with
Flowmaster mufflers. The engine bay
is fully dressed and factory fresh,
making it a noteworthy part of the
build. A rebuilt TH350 trans moves
the good rearward through the
original driveshaft.
Taking on the sheetmetal
restoration of any classic truck can
be a very time-consuming part of the
build. Thankfully the C10 was from
California with a nice, clean, rust-
free original body. Once any minor
repairs were made, it was metal
finished and gapped to perfection.
To bring it all to life, a rich coating
of PPG ’72 Chevrolet Sequoia Green
was laid down across all the panels.
Completing the exterior, a fresh grille
along with trim, emblems, mirrors,
lights, and bumpers were added for
that extra bit of dazzle.
Inside, the C10 embraces its
original roots with the factory dash
filled with original dials, including
a factory tachometer while a tilt
column mounts the original steering
wheel to navigate the course with
shifts moving through a stock
column-mounted unit. Amenities
include factory air conditioning,
AM/FM radio, tinted glass, and
Cheyenne-level trim. For plenty
of comfort the stock bench was
reupholstered in Cheyenne Super-
style with green olive vinyl and
hound’s-tooth fabric complemented
by matching olive loop pile carpet.
This is one very cool shop truck with
a perfect stance racking up the miles
across New England, and to us that’s
the real deal!
