With the old parts off
the motor and out of the
way, it was time to install
the new Edelbrock parts
and button the motor back
up. The first thing was to
install the new Rolling
Thunder roller cam. With
the radiator, trans cooler,
and A/C condenser out of
the way, we coated the cam
bearing journals and lobes
with assembly lube and
carefully slid it in. Next
came the Edelbrock True
Roller timing set; as per
Edelbrock’s instructions we
installed it with the timingmarks straight up (not
advanced or retarded). We
checked it with a degree
wheel, it was dead on, and
reinstalled the original
timing cover with a new
seal and gaskets that also
came from Edelbrock.
The harmonic balancerIf you were with us last month, you know that we decided that Project
Update could use a bit more horsepower without succumbing to the cost of a crate motor
or high-end rebuild. We ran it on the dyno and worked with Smitty at Edelbrock to come
up with a game plan. Aside from the water pump exploding on the dyno and taking out
the radiator, everything went well with the dyno run and teardown. If you haven’t seen
the story, look for it at: http://www.hotrod.com/articles/small-block-ford-rr/.
