fan of the Edelbrock carbs pretty
much since they came out and this
newest version with the annular
flow boosters not only improves
idle quality but the off-idle
acceleration is greatly enhanced
and eliminates flat spots that can
be tough to tune out of other carbs.
For this 302, the 650 cfm was all
that was needed, but they do offer
an 800-cfm version for larger
motors and higher horsepower
ratings. We slid the PerTronix
Flame Thrower III distributor back
in place and set the timing. All
that was left to do was bolt up the
Doug’s Tri Y headers, valve covers,
and air cleaner.
To complement the black Air-
Gap manifold we ordered up a set
of Edelbrock’s Classic Finned valve
covers in black as well as their
Oval Classic Finned air cleaner. We
really like the look of the sinister,
no-nonsense black finish, giving
the motor a purpose-built look.
It is night and day better than
the grungy old motorsport valve
covers, swap meet air cleaner, and
dirty old manifold.
With everything back together
we filled it full of Lucas Hot
Rod 10W-40 oil that is specially
formulated for older motors like
this and even has enough zinc for
flat-tappet cams. It was time to
