Classic Trucks – November 2019

(Jacob Rumans) #1

Right off the bat we could feel

that this was a whole different

animal. It was smoother at idle and

pulled harder away from a stop. We

decided to put some miles on it to

make sure everything was settled

in before heading back to the dyno.

After a few hundred miles and a

little fine-tuning, we were back

at GTR High Performance to strap

the Effie back on the dyno and

see where we ended up, hopefully

without any more catastrophes.

As the guys were strapping

the old Ford to the dyno, we were

talking about the differences and

what we hoped to see when the

runs were made. The one thing

that was probably going to hold us

back was a still relatively low 9:1

compression ratio. This was due to

the dished pistons and the fact that

we wanted to keep this low buck

weekend upgrade to be an easy

affair without pulling apart the

bottom end. Now that I think about

it, this would be a perfect candidate

for a turbo or centrifugal blower;

maybe a future story in the making.

The other thing we talked about

was how the motor ran nice and

cool with the new U.S. Radiator

and Flowkooler water pump. I had

installed a 195-degree thermostat

07 Edelbrock has its own proprietary chromoly push rods. We put a little assembly lube on
the tips and slid them in place.
