WELCOME TO BRIDES’
SPECIAL MOTHER OF
THE BRIDE SECTION.
When it comes to the
perfect wedding gown,
your choices are far-
reaching - and you know
exactly where to look
(hello, Brides!). But for
mums, it can be trickier.
My own mum (pictured
with me on my wedding
day in 2008) found
choosing her own out t
di cult – knowing all
eyes would be on her, she
felt under immense
pressure to ‘get it right’.
In the end she picked
a stunning Pronovias lace
jacket and organza skirt.
But witnessing the trouble
she had has made me
realise how indispensable
this guide will be for your
own mum. Turn over for
some celebrity inspiration,
while page 124 has day-
to-night accessories you’ll
both love. Be sure to let us
know what your mother
wore by tweeting a photo
to @bridesmagazine,
using #MOBbrides.
Happy shopping!

YOUR 7-PAGE MOTHER-OF-THE-BRIDE STYLE GUIDE
HAIR
Occasion hair
doesn’t have to be
stiff and formal.
Add textured height
with a pro-dry,
or try a simple
updo.
MAKE UP
Strong eyes
and defined brows
frame the face, while
rosy lips and soft
cheeks are ageless.
See our beauty tips
on page 126.
PLEATING
Any wobbly bits
are banished when
you wear a fuller,
pleated skirt. An added
bonus; the pleats ensure
the skirt will move gently
as you walk, giving you
the illusion of gliding
effortlessly.
SHOES
These peep-
toes with a mid heel
go with any dress. Get
a pedicure at least
two days before! (See
page 116 for
inspiration!)
LENGTH
A hemline that
hits the knee is the
most flattering (below
the knee makes legs look
shorter). Bare legs –
prepped and tanned – are
ideal. If you wear tights,
go for no thicker
than 10 denier.
POCKETS
Fashionable,
fun and, above all,
very useful! Ditch the
clutch and store your
lippy in here (and a few
tissues for the odd
tear during the
speeches).
NECKLINE
Rounder,
higher necklines
are flattering on the
over-50s – covering
the décolletage.
The neck appears
elongated and
elegant.
DROP
WAIST
When combined
with a flared skirt,
it conceals the
stomach and
hips where
needed.
COLOUR/
PATTERN
Rose suits most
skin tones. The
varying shades of pink
soften this print and
look modern – block
colours can be
ageing.
WAIST
A nipped-in
waist defines the
figure. Tailoring is key
to creating a svelte yet
wedding-appropriate
silhouette. This is
feminine, but not
too sexy!
