From Cold War origins to
modern day movements, The
Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 is a
‘brief discussion’ about these
tanks and some of the more
well-known models. It is written
in both English and Polish and
the early chapters are well illustrated thanks to
the use of many colour photographs showing
the vehicles in use around the world. About
three-quarters of the book is dedicated to
modelling the Polish Leopard 2A6 in 1/
scale. Modellers and wargamers will find
it an essential reference guide as it covers
everything from assembling the model and
painting techniques by using
colour photographs and step-
by-step instructions. The final
pages of the book contain
some wonderful colour images
of the finished product along
with some illustrated images
showing different variants of
the tank.
Verdict: A good addition
to the libraries of modellers,
wargammers and anyone with
an interest in the history of
the Leopard.

Part of the popular Images of
War series, M1 Abrams looks
at the principle main battle tank
of the US military since 1980.
Author David Doyle has penned
several books on military history
and this one, as can be expected,
is illustrated in detail thanks to an array of
colour and black and white photographs. The
M1 Abrams can be viewed from any angle and
the work shows the evolution of this iconic
fighting vehicle, which will always be remem-
bered for its role in the Gulf War of 1991. The
Abrams has been in service for nearly 40
years and with such a long life has under-
gone continual improvements
and upgrades, which the
book illustrates throughout.
There have been three major
variants and the features of
the various models are shown
across the eight chapters.
Verdict: Well illustrated with
many previously unpublished
photographs. Certainly worth get-
ting if your interest lies in modern
armour or if you have others
from the Images of War series.

Using data from both Soviet
and German archives, the
authors have presented a
comprehensive analysis of the
major defeat suffered by the
Wehrmacht in Hungary during
World War Two. Tomb of the
Panzerwaffe is well illustrated
with more than 100 rare photographs and
colour maps. The book was first published in
2014 and has been translated into English by
Stuart Britton. It covers a period in March 1945
when the Wehrmacht launched a counter of-
fensive in the area of Lake Balaton in Hungary,
however, the subsequent defeat of the Sixth
Panzer Army was a major
catastrophe for Germany. The
Soviet forces inflicted severe
losses on the attacking Ger-
mans, from which they were
unable to recover.
Verdict: Russian military
historians and authors Aleksei
Isaev and Maksim Kolomiets
have done a great job on the
book which sheds more light
on this period in history. The
addition of rare photographs
showing destroyed German
armour makes it a strong
addition to any library.
