A fi re has torn through lorry trailers
at a domestic appliance factory in
Peterborough. About 50 fi refi ghters
worked to bring the blaze under con-
trol at the Whirlpool UK headquarters
in Shrewsbury Avenue, with up to 40
trailers aff ected.
Witnesses used social media to
report hearing explosions as billowing
clouds of dark smoke were visible for
miles. There were no reported casual-
ties but Public Health East of England
issued a warning to residents near the
site to keep windows closed and limit
their exposure to the smoke.
Cambridgeshire fi re and rescue ser-
vice group commander Karl Bowden
said the bangs heard by members of
the public were from tyres on the trail-
ers bursting from their rims in the heat.
The site is the UK head offi ce of
Whirlpool, a household appliance
company that owns brands such as
Hotpoint, Indesit, Maytag, KitchenAid
and Creda and makes tumble dryers
and washing machines.

Police have named the victim of a
stabbing in Brixton, south London,
as detectives appealed for more
witnesses to come forward.
Lee Casey, 39, was taken to a
London hospital suffering a stab
wound but was pronounced dead at
2pm on Thursday. Police and para-
medics, along with an air ambulance,
were called to the scene in Brixton Hill
shortly after midday.
Two men, aged 44 and 59, were
arrested on suspicion of attempted
murder on the day of the incident and
were later released on bail.
DCI Katherine Goodwin of the
Metropolitan police said extensive
searches would be carried out: “We
are following a number of lines of
enquiry with a review of CCTV foot-
age and witness statements moving
at a pace. We are piecing together a
schedule of events leading up to this
horrifi c murder and your information,
not matter how insignifi cant it may
seem, could be the small detail that
completes the picture.”
A Whirlpool spokesman said: “Most
importantly, we can confirm that
nobody has been injured in this inci-
dent and none of the buildings on our
site have been aff ected.
“A fi re broke out at approximately
6.45pm on Thursday in an area of our
Peterborough headquarters where
heavy goods vehicle trailers are
parked. These trailers contained spare
parts and the blaze spread to approxi-
mately 30 of them.
“ We would like to off er our most sin-
cere thanks to the emergency services
for all their assistance in tackling this
incident. We also apologise to people
living and working in the area for any
disruption caused.”
Cambridgeshire fi re and rescue ser-
vice said the blaze had involved trailer
units loaded with parts for washing
machines and refrigerators.
Firefi ghters worked late into Thurs-
day night to dampen down the blaze.
The fi re service posted images showing
a number of lorry trailers completely
gutted by fi re. Firefi ghters inspected
the site again yesterday and an inves-
tigation was launched into the cause
of the blaze.
