(^10) The big picture
Workers celebrate with a well-earned pint after laying the fi nal
beam during the construction of the new Saint Mary’s hospital in
Manchester. The image recalls Lunch Atop a Skyscraper; the
elevation is more modest here, but the mood is similar, the men
appearing relaxed at an exposed height at which many would
be fearful. Tom Stuttard was one of the Guardian’s fi rst staff
photographers, and worked for the paper for 46 years (1925 to 1971).
During that time he transitioned from using large-format
equipment with glass-plate negatives to the more modern,
handheld camera used to capture this image – a visual reminder
of Manchester’s changing urban landscape in the 1960s.
