rage crying “ alternate ” in rhythm with his
energetic hops. What might have triggered
this?
2 Sheriff Einstein bought each of the posse of
11 raised in Covfefe County the same number
of candies (the sort you can suck on for hours
when you are trailing a fl eeing desperado day
after day over tough but tedious terrain) as
there were members of the posse. As they
were about to set off , a number fewer than
there had been joined them. On sharing the
sweets fairly among the posse he found he
had 2 left over, which he pocketed. How
many in the posse? How many sweets did
they each receive? Some posse members only
ride for the sweets.

3 Andy was alarmed to be asked to sum this
series to infi nity:

But it didn’t phase Candy. What did she do?
4 Ben Netlark’s
robotic fl ea (Miriam)
starts at the top
vertex O of a
tetrahedron. With
each move Miriam
jumps to another
vertex. What are the
chances she is back at the same vertex from
which she started after 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 ... moves?
If you know the chances after n moves, how
can you work out the chances for n + 1 moves?
Can you spot any patterns?

Hard No 673

The normal rules of Sudoku apply: fi ll each row, column and 3x3 box with all
the numbers from 1 to 9. In addition, the digits in each inner shape (marked by
dots) must add up to the number in the top corner of that box. No digit can be
repeated within an inner shape.
