Ingredients

CRUST

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

½ tsp. kosher salt

8 tbsp. unsalted butter,

melted and slightly

cooled

FILLING

2 large eggs

1 cup granulated sugar

½ tsp. baking powder

1½–2 tbsp. finely grated

lemon zest

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

confectioners’ sugar,

for dusting

flaky sea salt, such as Maldon,

for sprinkling

1 Heat the oven to 350ºF,

with a rack in the middle.

Lightly grease (with non-

stick cooking spray) and

line an 8-inch square bak-

ing pan with parchment

paper, allowing for a 2-inch

overhang on all sides, cre-

ating handles to lift. Lightly

spray parchment with

cooking spray.

2 For the crust: In a large

bowl, whisk together flour,

sugar, and salt. Add the

cooled melted butter and

stir to combine. Turn the

mixture out into the baking

pan and press evenly over

the bottom. Bake until the

edges are just beginning

to brown, 20–22 minutes.

3 While crust bakes, make

the filling: With an electric

mixer, beat the eggs in a

medium bowl until

combined. Add sugar, bak-

ing powder, lemon zest, and

lemon juice, and beat on

medium-high until the mix-

ture is frothy, 2–3 minutes.

4 Pour the filling into the

hot crust. Return the pan to

the oven and bake until filling

is just set, 20–22 minutes.

Let cool completely in the

pan on a wire rack, at least

90 minutes. For the best

flavor and easiest cutting,

chill in the refrigerator at

least 4 hours or up to 1 day.

5 To serve, cut the bars

into 2-inch squares, then

dust with confectioners’

sugar and sprinkle with

flaky salt.

“They complement and con-

trast each other in a way that

is what I hope to be exciting

and inspiring.” She breaks

down what that entails for three

trendsetting characters.

“Sam’s look is replete with

textures, patterns, and

a range of fashion genres,”

says Ceci, who sources all

the character’s clothes from

vintage and thrift shops.

Coco Conners

(Antoinette Robertson)

Her character always has

“an eye on the men,” says

Ceci, so she’s usually in

dresses with form-fitting

silhouettes and a “vibrant

and saturated color palette.”

(Ashley Blaine Featherson)

She loves ’80s fashion,

earthy geometric prints, and

African textiles. “Her lewks

are made complete with

bold accessories,” says Ceci.

“In a word: fire!”
