“This may be the most overdue award ever,” said Justin
Timberlake, who, along with Timbaland, Lizzo and Janet
Jackson, paid taped tribute to Missy Elliott — recipient of
the Video Vanguard Award. Kicking it off with new single
“Throw It Back,” Missy went through her hits with an army
of elastic dancers, including Alyson Stoner (below), who

H.E.R. brought her main
squeeze — a snake
H.E.R., nominated in three categories including
New Artist, walked last night’s purple carpet with a
ball python wrapped around her neck (above).
“I had to bring Big Mama with me” the 22-year-old
singer-songwriter told MTV, gesturing at her pet —
a “noodle,” as she lovingly calls it on Instagram.
“I got 5 noodles at home,” she wrote.
Big Mama’s not the first snake to wriggle its way
into this awards show: Britney Spears famously
danced with a python at the 2001 VMAs, and Justin
Bieber brought his tiny snake, Johnson, to the 2011
ceremony. Even last night, H.E.R.’s pet had reptilian
company: YouTube personality Tana Mongeau
brought a large yellow snake as her “date.”
When a red-carpet host asked if she was having a
Britney moment, H.E.R. said, “Yeah, I guess so.” On
Instagram, she explained: “I try to bring [my snakes]
everywhere I can because people love them.”
In the post, H.E.R. credited Jay Brewer, owner of
Prehistoric Pets pet shop in Fountain Valley, Calif.,
for getting her into serpents. “They are really cool,”
