With the masking tape
removed we can now see
that although the OD is
nicely weathered, the black
areas look quite stark in
contrast. Note that the
counter-shading on the
gun barrel is underway.
This was repainted later
using a very pale blue
To tone down the black
areas, some subtle fading
and streaking effects
were applied using
heavily thinned Lifecolor
Dirty Hemp and South
Europe Dust. The overall
scheme now looks more
unified
British Achilles vehicles
didn’t usually display much
in the way of markings,
basically only consisting
of arm of service symbols
and divisional signs. If
they did carry further
markings, they were either
obscured by large amounts
of stowage or camouflage
netting etc. The author
struggled to find any
references of Achilles
displaying serial numbers
Once the decals had
dried and been sealed
with some matt varnish,
the author set about
applying an initial
colour wash. For this he
wanted to try something
a little different; AMMO
by Mig Dark Green Grey
Panel Line Wash. This
did need thinning a
little further with white
spirit, but once done, it
proved perfect for the
effect he was after
