Gennaro Zappa builds Italeri's 1:12 1980 Renault RE23 turbo, straight from the box
I
n 1977 the French car
manufacturer Renault made its
debut in the Formula 1 World
Championship with a team of
its own that introduced important
innovations in the racing world. It
took part in the 1980 season with
the Renault RE20, equipped with a
turbocharged V6 Renault Gordini
EF1 engine capable of delivering
520bhp. The team was completely
French with drivers Jean-Pierre
Jabouille in the number 15 car and
René Arnoux with in 16. During
the season the team took three
victories in the Grand Prix of
Brazil, South Africa and Austria.
The Renault RE20 series was
modified and improved and also
took part in the first five races
of the 1981 season, when it was
replaced by the RE30 series with
a redesigned chassis. Italeri's kit
offers the possibility of creating
multiple versions, so I chose the
Arnoux car from (number 16) in
the 1980 British Grand Prix at the
Brands Hatch circuit.
The kit comes moulded in various colours
of polystyrene including white, yellow, black
and plated. Here we see the grey sprues
carrying the mechanical parts
Also to be found in the box are lengths of
vinyl tubing in red, black, grey and clear,
woven mesh, vinyl drive-belts, copper wire,
metal springs, micro-screws and more
