manually, by piercing with
a suitable needle. This
work took a very long time!
Afterwards, the model
exhibited much crisper
surface detail. To upgrade
the cockpit I used a resin
seat from Aires plus a set of
PE belts from Eduard. The
whole thing was painted in
Mr Color 308, Rubber Black
and 305 respectively. It was
the first time I used a set
of decals for the instrument
panel and the final effect
was quite pleasing. I created
some metallic wear and tear
on the painted seats using
a silver metallic paint using
the drybrush technique.
The entire model was
painted with Mr Surfacer
1200 undercoat. After
this was dry, I sanded the
surfaces with a Tamiya
abrasive sponge to create a
perfectly smooth surface. The
next stage was 'pre-shading'
which I created using
Tamiya black paint. Again,
I decided to use a painting
technique called 'layers of
texture'. This is a matrix
of tiny, irregular spots of
white acrylic paint applied
by sponge, which in the
final phase of painting
creates amazing effects of
colour depth. I prepared the
surfaces with Mr Color 306,
applying very thin layers of
paint so as not to completely
cover the previous effects.

TONAL CHANGES
Then I applied the
discolouration layer,
lightening the paint with
a small amount of Tamiya
flat white. In addition,
based on the reference
photos, I painted the
so-called 'touchups', using

The Revell set had a few imperfections;
here we see fairly large gaps at the air
intake joints

Just like the air intakes, the rear
part of the fuselage required the
use of putty

be visible, theref ore, using the Tamiya
scriber they were deepened slightly

Using a photo-etched steel template, new panel lines and
access hatches were emphasised

the panel lines and rivets

The base model was upgraded with
several additional sets including
resin wheels, resin seats, seat
harnesses and pitot tube

If you’re setting up a modelling bench and wish to invest in new materials – without having to invest too much – this
set of five weathering pigments from AMMO is ideal to get started. Based around ‘Europe Earth’ (arguably the
most versatile pigment of the lot) and augmented by ‘Dark Earth’, ‘Track Rust’, ‘Gun Metal’ and ‘Rubble’, the armour
modeller has pretty much all he or she needs to weather-up an AFV. Excellent!
