The M10 Tank Destroyer mounted a three-inch gun, with an open-topped turret.
While very mobile, the gun was seen as insufficient to deal with German heavy
tanks that were beginning to appear in WW2. In response, the US Army developed
the M36, which mounted a 90mm gun in a different open-topped turret, as a
powerful tank destroyer. The hull was basically that of the M10A1, with only the
turret as a distinguishing feature. As demand outstripped the supply of M10
hulls, a small number of turrets were mounted on M4A3 Sherman type
hulls and named M36B1. The M36 served from October 1944, through
the Korean War with the US Army and they were then passed on to other
armies. A few were still in use with in the Balkans in 1995.
This superb book opens with a brief introduction, and then the first 40 pages
show the M36 in action, with one or two photos per page, with clear informative
captions. The next 100 pages show colour photos of a fully restored M36, with
pictures showing the sort of details that modellers need. The last fifteen pages deal
with the M36B1, with action photos and shots of preserved vehicles. Altogether, this
is a wonderful resource for anyone making an M36 model and a great source of
interesting facts about this unusual vehicle. CLS

This book is number nineteen in this excellent series, and like the others is
absolutely fantastic. After a couple of pages of detailed introduction, the A4
book is filled with 100 full-page crisp photos of German tracked artillery, based
on the Panzer I, II, III, IV and Tiger, plus the 38(t) chassis. The pictures are
carefully chosen to illustrate key points and the photos are all newly in print, and
do not consist of the same tired images that have appeared in many previous
books. The photos all show war-time action shots, rather than factory photos and
therefore we can actually see what the vehicles looked like in service. The captions
(like the whole book, in English and Hungarian) provide a great deal of insight from
a respected author, and help to explain the photos and point out items of interest.
For anyone interested in military vehicles, the book is an absolutely fascinating read.
For anyone making a model SP gun – for example the new Tamiya Hummel – then
this book is a wonderful source of detail, ideas and inspiration. CLS
