Dual-gauge in Mexico

Narrow-gauge 2-8-0s work in National of Mexico’s
dual-gauge San Lazaro terminal in Mexico City
in August 1960. Nearest the camera, NdeM 253
has hold of a Chicago & North Western boxcar
— standard-gauge, of course. Robert Ludwig

Rich roof-top detail
An overhead view of Northern Pacific GP9 240 on
a Cle Elum–Yakima, Wash., freight in 1969 offers
a study in roof detail. The steam- loco motive
bell, “firecracker” radio antenna, Pyle- National
warning beacon, and hood-top air tanks enliven
the lines of this Plain Jane Geep. John C. Illman
