T

he sound of your track
churning the snow and
your skis carving a new
line may be replacing the braap
of your motor in the sleds of
the future. And, thanks to
Taiga Motors, the future is
coming faster than you think.
The Montreal-based compa-
ny’s electric snowmobiles are
slated to start production in summer
2020 with delivery in time for the 2020-
21 season. With three models to choose
from in the crossover/trail, mountain and
utility segments a silent motor, linear
power and impressive torque will be avail-

able starting about $15,000.
Each sled’s range varies depending on
the type of riding and conditions, but
Taiga says for the average trail rider run-
ning 60 km/h (37.2 mph) you can expect a
range of 100 km (62.1 miles). However,

there will be extended range
models with additional bat-
tery capacity. Charging the
sled can take place with a reg-
ular household outlet (
hours), an installed Level 2
Charger (2 Hours), or an
optional Level 3 – DC Fast
Charging unit (20 minutes).
Top speeds range from 68
mph to 100 mph depending
on the model and gear reduc-
tion.
As more riding land is lost
every year to environmental
concerns and objections of
noise pollution, this technolo-
gy could move the industry
toward a greener future, and the ability to
ride in more areas. These sleds also boast
a zero-maintenance powertrain, which
equates to an estimated savings of $2,
a year on fuel, oil changes, and CVT belt
or engine maintenance.
