waterproof grease. This may be a chal-
lenge to take apart if the sled is a few
years old, and you might need to replace
the bushings if they are difficult to
remove. If there is any slop between the
ski and the spindle, it is worth the head-
ache! I lube the steering post bushings
and tie-rod ends with lithium grease and
tighten all the bolts in the steering while
it is all apart. You’d be amazed how much
better the steering feels with a little TLC!
Your sled will handle so much better if it
is free of slop and everything is straight. I
also align the skis at this point, by mak-

ing sure the handlebars are straight and
using a tape measure on the rear of the
wear bar, then to the front. The sled
should be toed out 1/8 inch. The skis
have a tendency to toe-in if there is any
slop in the steering. This will correct that.

■ (^) Put your sled back together!
I’ve been working on snowmobiles since I
was a kid, but I still like to have someone
visually inspect everything I worked on,
to make sure there isn’t anything I left
loose, or missed all together. It beats hav-
ing the sled fall apart in the backcountry.
I’m sure by this point you will have quite
the list of parts to order. This is the time
I replace anything I may have neglected
the year before, most of the time that is
cosmetic for me. It always feels good to
know your sled is clean and ready to rip
before the first snowfall.
