Back on a street near you
... jumpers for goalposts
THE sight of children having a kickabout in
the street will feel for many like a distant
memory. But ‘jumpers for goalposts’
could once again spring up outside your
doorstep – as ministers pledge today to
make local streets safer for play.
The Government is issuing updated guid-
ance to make it easier for residents to
shut down local roads for street parties,sporting and other community events. It
has written to all councils across the UK to
encourage more ‘play streets’ – which
are closed to traffic – to be created.
The new Department for Transport guid-ance will simplify the application process
for temporary road closures, which can
be slow and costly. Residents apply to
their local council, which then has to
lodge a request with the DfT. If approved,the council has to take out an advert in a
local newspaper to warn of the closure.
The cost of this, which can be up to
£2,000, is often passed on to the residents- but councils have now been told they
can advertise the closure online instead.
Councils can now also lodge one applica-
tion form to close several roads repeat-
edly over a 12-month period, rather than
applying separately for each closure.
Roads minister Baroness Vere said the
move will boost the ‘health and wellbeing
of children, families and communities’.

Susannah Hourde, who has never
been reconciled with the pop starsome guys really do have all the

on good terms with so many of their
loves. But sir Rod stewart, who has
eight children with five different women,
showed how close he remains to the
mothers of seven of his children by
gathering four of them together to pose
during a family celebration.
Taken at the 40th birthday party for his
daughter Kimberly in Los Angeles, the photo
is believed to be the first time that so many
of his exes have been seen together.
Naturally, the 74-year-old singer is at the
centre of the snap, dressed in a silk waist-
coat and his trademark leopard-print loafers.
Next to him is his wife, Loose Women panel-
list Penny Lancaster, 48.
she’s the only of the quartet who can call
herself Lady stewart, as Rod was notknighted until 2016. They have two sons,
Alastair, 12, and Aiden, eight. To Penny’s
right is Kimberly’s mother, actress Alana
stewart, 74, who was sir Rod’s first wife.
During their five-year marriage she also had
a son, sean, who is now 38 and a musician.
on sir Rod’s left is his former girlfriend,
model Kelly emberg, 60, with whom he has a
daughter, Ruby, 32 – who followed in her
father’s footsteps and became a singer.
Kelly shared the photograph with friends,
joking: ‘A mothers’ reunion.’ To her left is sirRod’s second wife, model Rachel Hunter, 49.
They had two children together: Renee, a 27-
year-old dancer and yoga teacher, and Liam,
24, a professional ice hockey player in his
mother’s native New Zealand.
sir Rod has spoken of how close he is to the
three old flames. ‘They all live within three
minutes of me, and we’ve all got children
together,’ he said last year.
‘so we’ve got to be in each other’s lives for
the rest of our lives.’
However, conspicuous by her absence at
the party was susannah Hourde. she had a
daughter with sir Rod, sarah streeter, 56,
who was given up for adoption.
‘The reality is that he’s got a daughter
whose life he messed up for a very long time
— and my life, too,’ susannah said in 2013.
Her daughter has, though, been reunited
with sir Rod and said: ‘I used to be like
susannah, full of resentment, but then I real-
ised that dwelling on the past doesn’t get
