START on left with number given and follow instructions as you go across. In 30 seconds, beginners have to
complete their own challenge; intermediates have to complete their own challenge and the beginner’s;
advanced players have to complete their own challenge and the intermediate’s. SOLUTION BELOW

(a) ♠ K 10 7 4 ♥ 6 ♦ K J 6 4 ♣ K Q 8 4

(b) ♠ K Q 10 4 ♥ 7 ♦ K Q 6 4 ♣ A Q 9 3

(c) ♠ K Q 10 4 ♥ 7 ♦ A K 6 4 2 ♣ A Q 3

(d) ♠ A K 3 ♥ 8 ♦ A Q 4 ♣ A Q J 9 7 3
Your rHo has opened 1♥, and you have made a
take-out double on each of the above hands. What
action do you take next after LHo passes and
partner bids 1♠?
Players too frequently forget, when considering
their next action after a double, that they have
forced their partner to bid. The worst scenario, he
could be sitting with a yarborough and only three
spades. We are going to study responses to the dou-
ble next week, but, for now, he has less than eight
honour and distributional points.
With this knowledge you do not bid again unless
you are extra strong and want to suggest game, if
partner has a little bit more than he might have.
It is, therefore, easy to pass on hand (a). Hand (b)
is a borderline case for raising to 2♠ (with four losers
assuming a fit).
Hand (c) is even stronger, so you invite with a
jump to 3♠. On hand (d), you bid 3♣, which shows
your great strength and is absolutely forcing; most
importantly, it denies holding four spades, which
the initial double would imply.
