Owners of SPARTAN FIGHTER enjoyed a Group race success yesterday
courtesy of Living In The Past and they may well supplement that success here.
Threat clearly carries just that on the balance of his best form and he again ran a
blinder in defeat at Goodwood when narrowly touched off by Golden Horde who
enjoyed the benefit of the rail. However, Spartan Fighter looked ready for a step
up in class here last time and it’s worth noting he beat a subsequent Royal Ascot
winner on his Ripon debut. There looked plenty more in the tank last month when
he landed a modest five-runner affair, but the time stood up well and he could
trouble the likely favourite.

MABS CROSS has been the subject of an 11th hour jockey change with Gerald
Mosse taking over from regular pilot Paul Mulrennan, but the Frenchman was
on board when the filly landed the Abbaye last autumn and he may enjoy fur-
ther Group 1 success today. The presence of July Cup winner Ten Sovereigns
and Battaash provide stiff competition for the selection who found the latter too
strong at Haydock before running creditably behind her old adversary at Ascot
in the King’s Stand Stakes. However, Battaash has historically struggled at this
venue and Ten Sovereigns may well prove a tougher nut to crack even if he
must cope with a drop back to 5f. He has never looked short of speed and could
well take some pegging back from stall 11.

Goodfellow’s analysis
CORELLI was a shade unfortunate
not to register a first success of the
season at Newmarket a fortnight ago but may gain a measure of compensation
here. Aggressively ridden, the selection saw off all of the challengers bar Kelly’s
Dino who wore him down in the dying strides for a narrow verdict. Although
Corelli has been inched up by the handicapper for that agonising loss, he still
appeals as the type to be suited by today’s venue and gains the nod ahead of
recent Windsor scorer Caradoc and Jazeel who found his pocket picked at
Goodwood but still recorded another creditable effort.

Given that he is a stayer with a sharp turn of foot, it is difficult to envisage anything
other than a 9th victory on the bounce for STRADIVARIUS. He is never likely
to be the type to win by a wide margin and that was again the case at Goodwood
when he cosily saw off the gallant Dee Ex Bee and Cross Counter and looked to
have something in reserve to do so. Both Dee Ex Bee and Falcon Eight, winner
of a Sandown Listed event last time, will hold hopes of bringing down the champi-
on stayer, but Stradivarius invariably finds a way to win whatever test he is set.

RANKIE DEttORI
was reduced to tears
after his favourite
horse Enable won
her last race in Britain
with a brilliant display in
the Yorkshire Oaks.
the four-horse contest could
have been a banana skin, with
trainer John Gosden fearing it
would be a messy tactical affair.
But Dettori and his mount, the
1-4 favourite, made all the running
to see off old rival Magical, ridden
by Ryan Moore, by two and
three quarter lengths.
When Enable skipped away with
two furlongs of the mile-and-a-half
race to go, the Yorkshire crowd,
who had seemed gripped by
nervous tension, raised the roof.
An emotional Dettori (below),
who covered the mare in kisses
after his flying dismount, said: ‘I
don’t want to say too much
because I am tearful. I am getting
to know her more and more.
