focusedinsidethecore.
Atthepreformstage—when
thefiberis stilla large,dense
cylinder,about 15 centimeters
in diameterandmanymeters
long—it’streatedwithvaporized
chemicalsthataffectthelevel
ofrefractionandthusthe
movementoflightthroughthe
fiber.Germanium,forexample,
mightbeappliedtothecoreto
concentratethesignal;fluorine
onthecladdingredirectsthe
signaltothecore.Eachtype
offiber,dependingonitsuse,
requiresa uniquecocktail.
