Nightvisiontechnologyhasbecomereliableandwidespread,

approachis becomingpopular,lightintensificationremainsthe
industrystandard.Asmoonlightreflectedoffanobjectenters
thesebattery-poweredbinoculars,itpassesthroughthelensinto
animage-intensifyingtube.A photocathodethenconvertsthelight
intoelectronsthatareamplifiedbya photomultiplieranddirected
towarda phosphorescentscreentoproducea visibleimage.
Whenlight,in theformof
photons,hitsthehigh-
voltageintensifiertube,it
interactswitha negatively
chargedphotocathode
normallymadeofalkali
metals(sodium,potassium,
andcesium)ormetalloids
suchasantimony.
