per cent of the royalties from Postman
Pat books to Wood’s company.
The overall figure for profits on
sales of everything associated with
Postman Pat over four decades has
never been publicly revealed, but it is
thought to run into tens of millions of
pounds.
Woodland Animations sold its rights
to Postman Pat and other characters
to the licensing group Entertainment
Rights for £5million in 2001.
Mr Cunliffe was said to have lived
modestly and was believed not to
have even owned a passport.

Big-screen beauties wow Venice

Stars Cate Blanchett, above, and
Penelope Cruz are also in Venice

Stunning
Monica
Bellucci
arrives for
the film
screening

CLASSIC Italian beauty
Monica Bellucci looked
sensational as she stepped
out at the Venice International
Film Festival.
The former Bond girl wore a
semi-sheer red floral gown as
she joined other movie stars
at the glamorous festival.
The Matrix actress, 54,
reunited with ex-husband
Vincent Cassel, 52, for the
screening of a revamped
version of their 2002 film
Irreversible.
The couple were married

from 1999 until 2013 and
share daughters Deva, 14,
and Leonie, nine.
Vincent attended with his
new wife, actress Tina
Kunakey, 22.
Also in the mix were fellow
big-screen beauties Penelope
Cruz and Cate Blanchett.
Monica’s elegant ensemble
showed off a glimpse of the
black bodysuit she wore
underneath, with a ruffled
skirt flowing to the floor.

Irreversible follows two men
in Paris who seek vengeance
after one man’s girlfriend is
brutally raped.
In this new version, the
story unfolds in chronological
order, as opposed to the
original.
Director Gaspar Noe said
in a statement that viewers
“didn’t understand certain
aspects of the story” in the
original version.
He explained: “Until now,
Irreversible was a deliberate
puzzle.”

Postman Pat

fortune never

was delivered

to his creator

POSTMAN Pat creator John Cunliffe
left under £1million in his will after
missing out on a fortune in royalties, it
has emerged.
Mr Cunliffe, who died last
September aged 85, signed away the
bulk of the rights to his famous char-
acter before Pat became a TV favour-
ite in 1981.
Probate records released last week
reveal that Mr Cunliffe, of Ilkley, West
Yorkshire, left an estate worth
£828,051 to his wife Sylvia and son
Edward.
Mr Cunliffe was a moderately
successful author when the BBC
asked him to come up with an idea for
a new children’s programme.
He devised the character Postman
Pat and spent five weeks writing 13
stories.
The scripts were sent to animator
Ivor Wood, of The Magic Roundabout
and The Wombles fame, who immedi-
ately spotted the potential of Pat.
Mr Cunliffe sold the rights to
Wood’s production company,
Woodland Animations, who devised
the puppet characters of Pat and his
friends, and made his stories into 13
stop-motion episodes.
The deal meant that Mr Cunliffe
received no repeat fees for the series,
and only got 10 per cent from annuals
and comics, and nothing for other
merchandising. He also had to give 50 John Cunliffe with his famous creation
