THE widow of a motorist killed
on the M1 is launching a legal
battle over “smart” motorways.
Claire Mercer, 43, plans to
sue Highways England for corpo-
rate manslaughter after husband
Jason died following an accident
in June.
Mr Mercer, 44, and another
driver, Alexandru Murgeanu, 22,
were killed after a lorry ploughed
into their cars while they were
stationary on what used to be the
hard shoulder of the M1.
The pair had moved their vehi-
cles against the barrier to share
insurance details on the north-
bound side near Sheffield when
they were struck.
Yesterday, it emerged four peo-
ple have been killed on the
