VER come back with a
post-holiday glow, only to
feel as though it never
happened within days of
getting home? You’re not
alone. But keeping up a
few simple habits from your getaway
could help you feel on top of the
world all year long.

HOLIDAY ROMANCE
More than half of Britons say
their sex life improves while on
holiday with a long-term
partner.
According to research by
Jetcost.co.uk, they have sex up to
nine times in 10 days compared to
just twice in 10 days at home.
TRY: Pay attention to each other at

TRY: Many of us are deficient in
vitamin D in the colder months
because there simply isn’t enough
sunlight so take a good supplement.
Try Healthspan Vit D3, £8.95
(healthspan.co.uk).

BE SOCIABLE
“Because the sun is shining, kids are
off school and leave is booked, we
tend to socialise more in the
summer,” says psychologist Dr Meg
Arroll (drmegarroll.com).
“Social connectedness is important
both for emotional health and overall
well-being but when the nights draw
in we can easily go back to huddling
around screens.”
TRY: “Keep social
interaction going long
after the holidays have
ended by making
definite plans with
friends and family for
autumn,” says Dr Arroll.

STAY HYDRATED
We have no trouble
downing ice-cold drinks
when the sun is out. But,
according to the Natural
Hydration Council, a
staggering 89 per cent of
the UK population don’t

home. Research published in the
American Psychological Association
Journal found
that the secret to optimum sex is all
to do with the way you talk to your
partner and respond to their
emotional needs.
In short, listening plus empathy
equals sexual chemistry.

STICK WITH SPF
On holiday we’re meticulous about

applying sunscreen to protect our
skin from damage.
But when we get back to the UK,
the SPF is often consigned to the
cupboard.
TRY: “Continue to use SPF30
throughout the year,” advises Dr
Ross Perry, medical director of
Cosmedics UK (cosmedics.co.uk).
“Most people think that sunscreen is
only for summer or when
they’re on holiday and forget
how much sun exposure they’re
getting when walking the dog
or driving.
“Even in winter and
on cloudy days, UV
rays can still cause
damage.”
Try Murad Oil and
Pore Control SPF45,
£35 (murad.co.uk).

JUMP IN THE POOL
For many of us the only
time we swim is on our
summer holiday, yet
swimming is one of the
best all-round workouts
you can do.
Studies show it can
reduce your risk of heart
disease and Type 2
diabetes, boost your mood and
reduce stress.
TRY: Visit your local pool and invest
in snug-fitting goggles so you can put
your face in the water.
Try water aerobics or Aqua Zumba
and check out swimming.org to find
your nearest ASA Learn to Swim
adult lessons.

TURN THE PAGES
Over the summer many of us relax
with a good book. In a recent survey
a third of UK adults said holidays
are their preferred time to read.
TRY: People who read regularly
report lower levels of stress and
depression and stronger feelings of
relaxation, compared to when
watching TV or scrolling through
social media.
So scour the bookshelves in local
charity shops, join your local library
to reserve the latest bestsellers for
free and consider listening to an
audio book as you walk.

EAT WELL
“When it’s hot eating stodgy food just
doesn’t seem as appealing,” says Dr
Sally Norton, weight loss expert
(vavistalife.com).
“Choosing fresh fruit, veg and fish
over bulky carbs is a great holiday
habit to bring home.”
TRY: As autumn approaches,
experiment with new recipes using
different seasonal fruits and veg.
University of Warwick researchers
found that people’s happiness
increased with every extra serving of
fruit and veg, so aim for at least two
per meal.

VITAL VITAMINS
“Vitamin D is vital for our health and
well-being, regulating mood and
increasing our resistance to colds,”
explains Dr Sarah Brewer, medical
director of healthspan.co.uk
And our bodies automatically top
up reserves of vitamin D in the
summer as sunlight on the skin
triggers its production.
