nk enough water to maintain
lthy hydration levels.
Y: Always have a bottle of water
h you (at your desk, next to you
bed and in your handbag). If it’s in
in sight, you’re more likely to sip
it more frequently.
Not a fan of plain water? Infuse it
h fresh fruits and herbs for flavour.

TO SLEEP
lidays are a chance to catch up on
sed sleep, with many of us even
eezing in an afternoon nap.
nterestingly, there’s a theory that
ople who live in southern
diterranean countries, where
siestas are commonplace,
have a longer life
expectancy because of
their habit of sleeping
in the middle of the day.
TRY: Try not to slip
back into bad habits like
staying up late and
staring at sleep-
inhibiting, blue-light
gadgets in bed.
Instead, try to take
power naps if you can.
“At the very least, go to
sleep and wake up at the
same time
every day,” says Jessica

French, of wellbeing
charity CABA.
“This helps set your
body’s internal clock
and optimises the
quality of your
sleep.”

TAKE A STROLL
Strolling along
beach-front
promenades after an
evening meal is one of
the many joys of a
holiday abroad.
TRY: “It’s just a matter of the
right clothes and the right mindset to
make walking an all-year-round
habit,” says Dr Norton.
“The bracing cold can invigorate
you, plus boost levels of brown fat –
a type of fat that burns rather than
stores calories.”
Most smartphones have in-built
step counters, so use this to aim for
around 10,000 steps a day.

DINE TOGETHER
Whether you’re all-inclusive or
self-catering, families tend to eat
together on holiday.
While at home, more than half of
those surveyed in a survey by Co-op
Food said they dine separately – and

busy schedules mean a
fifth regularly dine
alone.
According to the
poll, 34 per cent
eat on a sofa.
TRY: “Eating
around the table
helps
communication
and reduces the
amount and speed
at which you eat as
it’s harder to munch
when chatting,” says Dr
Norton.

HIT AIRPLANE MODE
Most of us spend less time checking
emails and poring over social media
posts while relaxing on holiday.
TRY: To help detach and unwind,
turn your devices off (or onto
airplane mode) an hour before bed.
Then, leave them off for your first
hour of waking so that you start the
day on your terms. The more difficult
you find this, the more benefit you’re
likely to get from doing it.

MOISTURISE MORE
“We tend to moisturise more in the
summer months, as the skin becomes
drier and dehydrated due to the sun,

and we want to maintain and prolong
our tans,” explains Ed Lemont,
grooming expert (mrthirtysomething.
com).
TRY: “It’s just as important to
continue moisturising the body in
autumn and winter, as cold air and
central heating can dry out skin just
as much as the sun,” says Ed.
Choose a lotion or oil with a
fragrance that transports you back to
the beach.

PLAN DAYS OUT
Boat trips, bike rides, sightseeing,
days at the beach... we’re far more
adventurous away from home.
TRY: It doesn’t have to cost the world
to feel like you’re on holiday.
The UK has so many beautiful
places to explore. Why not go for a
long country walk, check out the
tourist attractions in your area or
visit a free local museum?

SWITCH OFF THE BOX
On holiday we’re far too busy eating,
drinking, chatting and having fun to
bother with the TV.
TRY: Make a conscious effort not to
slip back into the routine of watching
television all evening.
Decide what you want to watch
and switch off afterwards.
