UNDER THE STARS
could have a first
attempt at seven furlongs
in the Moyglare Stud
Stakes on Irish Champions
Weekend.
James Tate’s charge
sprang a 25-1 shock when
winning an Ascot Group
Three on soft ground in
July and was fourth in the
Lowther at York.
Beaten two lengths in
fourth by Living In The
Past, Tate is now
considering a move up in
distance, and graduating to
Group One class, at the
Curragh on September 15.

He said: “It’s not 100
per cent but we may
have a crack at the
Moyglare. The Lowther

looked a little bit too much
of a speed test for her.

“The ground was
obviously faster at
York than at Ascot and
maybe it didn’t suit her
quite as well.
“We could now wait and
hope the Cheveley Park
comes up on easier ground,
or we could try seven
furlongs where it’s less of a
test of speed.

“She’s bred to get
seven furlongs I think,
but it’s not 100 per cent
that we will go to Ireland.”
Stablemate Nasaiym
finished eighth in the
Lowther and Tate is taking
a long-term view with her.
He added: “She’s one for
next year.”

TADEJ POGACAR has
become the youngest
Vuelta a Espana stage
winner in 38 years.
The Slovenian, 20,
triumphed in a rain-
soaked mountain chase
in Andorra in stage nine.
He is in his first year as
a pro with UAE Team
Emirates and not since
Celestino Prieto in 1981
has someone so young
won a Vuelta stage.
Nairo Quintana took
the Red Jersey after
finishing 23 seconds
behind Pogacar. Primoz
Roglic was third and is
six seconds behind
Quintana overall, with
overnight leader Miguel
Angel Lopez now third,
17 seconds back.

RICH AGAR refused to
say if he wants to stay in
charge of Leeds Rhinos
after seeing them secure
Super League survival.
Rhinos looked to be
heading for relegation
when Agar took over as
caretaker coach in May
but yesterday’s win at
London Broncos means
they are safe.
Rock-bottom Broncos
are four points behind
Leeds with two games to
play and their points
difference is more than
250 worse.
The Rhinos have said
they will not make a
decision on their coach
for 2020 until the end of
the season. Agar
described the role as a
privilege but said: “I
haven’t had a chance to
sit down with the club.
“Those things will look
after themselves. We will
sit down and have a chat
and I’ll respect whatever
the club want to do.”
London coach Danny
Ward said: “We were
rolled over defensively
too much in the first
half.”

Marshall troops rising

FINE LINE:
Liam Marshall
completes his
hat-trick

LIAM MARSHALL’S sparkling – and
controversial – hat-trick sent Wigan
second as a title defence that looked
lost in April gathers pace.
Back then, Adrian Lam’s side had
won just three of their opening 11
matches. Now they have won 10 from
11 and another Old Trafford triumph
cannot be ruled out.
Winger Marshall’s treble lit up this
clash, although his third was slammed
by Wakefield coach Chris Chester for
coming from an incorrect restart.
Chester said: “To let Marshall tap it
wherever he wanted is a disgraceful
call. You can cop a player being a
metre away from the centre, but not
when it’s six or seven metres. It’s a call

you shouldn’t get wrong, there’s a line
to tell you where to tap the ball.”
Lam chose to focus on his team’s
march up the table. He said: “I always
thought we’d make the top five. I’ve
learnt a lot about myself as a coach.
Everyone has worked really hard.”
Marshall put Wigan 10-0 ahead but
Wakefield levelled through James
Batchelor and Jacob Miller.
After Marshall’s disputed effort, Ben
Jones-Bishop gave Trinity hope, but
Sam Powell’s last-minute try settled it.
