Test cricket back at the heart of
future planning.
He said: “It is important to say
that before what happened on
Sunday and, even before we got
bowled out for 67, we were all
aware we’ve got some work to do
with our batting in Test cricket.
“We’re far from the finished
article and worldwide Test cricket
has suffered due to the shorter
formats and the focus on
franchise cricket. We are aware of
that and, in the next period going
forward, we’ve really got to
redress that balance”
At 1-1 and with Ben Stokes in
the form of his life, there is every
chance that England can still
regain the Ashes over the next
two games, starting on
Wednesday, to make it a
double-winning summer.
And Giles revealed that
Stokes, along with Joe Root,
badgered him to return the
vice-captaincy to the all-rounder,
who must now do his bit to
help secure the win despite the

Giles tells Roy he is

in last-chance saloon

JASON ROY has been warned
he must prove his worth sooner
rather than later – with England
told they have “work to do” with
their batting.
Roy, who has been switched
to No4, is not alone among
English top-order batsmen who
have struggled to flourish in Test
cricket after being promoted,
but batting in an unfamiliar role
against a red ball was an
experiment that did not work.
A top score of 28 in three
Tests this series followed by four
single-figure scores has brought
about the switch with Joe Denly,
who has far more experience as
an opener, for the fourth Test at
Old Trafford. “The selectors have
shown great faith in Jason Roy,”
said managing director Ashley
Giles. “We all believe that the
experiment to bat him at
the top was one worth
taking and that may be
shuffled around this week.
“These are big series and
we have on our mind that
blooding new players in an
Ashes series is particularly
difficult for them. It is tough
and challenging and there is
no harder environment.
“There is a lot of faith
that Jason can deliver at
this level but everyone at
any point in their career,
whether it is me or anyone
else, you only get so long to
prove what you can do in
Test cricket.”
England’s search for a
settled top order has been
ongoing for more than five
years and, while the focus
on white-ball cricket was
clearly worth it to deliver
the World Cup this summer,
Giles is determined to put

Steve Smith.
“He badgered myself and Tom
Harrison, the CEO,” said Giles.
“He was desperate to do it. He
really is one of your warriors
when you take to the field.
“He believed that, as Joe’s
right-hand man, he can deliver
for him and he is demonstrating
that pretty well at the moment.
“It is a really even contest.
There was a change in momentum
on that last day in Leeds and
you can’t hide the disappointment
the Australians would have felt.
“We’ve still got to suss Steve
Smith out. I don’t think anyone in
our attack is scared of him, but
we all understand he is a really
good player.”
