broadcastnow.co.uk August 2019| Broadcast Hot Shots | 3
The future is in safe hands
The term Hot Shots is apt in more ways than usual to describe the
group of 37 young, uber-talented men and women selected this year.
The photoshoot was held on Thursday 25 July, which was offi cially the
hottest July day on record. Yet they lived up to their burgeoning
reputations by being professional despite the ridiculous heat. The
following pages show off the stunning results.
Of course, it was their work in the fi eld that got them to that shoot.
The 2019 crop includes ultra-smart development execs, script editors,
emerging producers, agents, short-form content creators, in-demand
directors, stars of the post-production industry, camera operators,
animators and the writers of tomorrow.
There was a sharp increase in the number of entries for writers and
performers this year, and that is refl ected in an enlarged focus on that
area of the business. We feature a duo born just a week apart who are
now rising stars at Comedy Central and a scriptwriter who, when not
appearing on screen, has found time to write a children’s book and
comedy pilots for broadcasters.
There’s also the writer whose series about growing up in Cypriot
north London is headed for broadcast television and the natural
storyteller who seamlessly swapped the soaps for Sky 1 buddy
cop procedural Bulletproof.
Besides all the talent on show, the diversity of this year’s 125
applicants – in terms of genders, races, background and life
experiences – was particularly encouraging and suggests the industry
is getting its act together and becoming a more inclusive place. That
trend should continue with this next generation of talent, and help
maintain British TV’s reputation for unparalleled creativity.
